    Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir likely in April

    Srinagar: The assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are likely to be held in April along with the general elections.

    According to sources, the centre has informed the election commission that the elections should be held in April. “It is now the Election Commission that has to take a final call and set dates for the state assembly elections,” said sources.

    Adding that Election Commission will  take a decision after consulting security agencies.

    The last assembly elections were held in 2014 after which BJP-PDP coalition government was formed. In June 2018, the government fell when the BJP pulled out of the coalition and the state went under Governor’s rule for six months. The state is currently under President’s rule.

    In the coming elections, the People’s Conference led by Sajad Lone is also among the contenders along with other political parties. Lone has been getting more support and leaders joining the party.

    While as the PDP led by Mehbooba Mufti has been losing leaders, who have joined other parties in the recent weeks.

    National conference has been boosted by the joining of leaders from People’s Democratic Party.

    The mainstream political parties of Kashmir have been calling for an election .

    In December  Home Minister Rajnath Singh had  said the then Governor N N Vohra had sent a report in June after speaking to leaders of all major parties that none of them had expressed any intention to form a government.

    Adding that the Central government would take no wrong or immoral action in the state, saying it is ready for assembly polls but the decision has to be taken by the Election Commission.
