    Doctors at SKIMS conduct rare procedures

    Srinagar, Apr 3: Doctors and faculty at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) carried out two rare procedures recently, elevating the quality of care at the hospital.
    A team of doctors of the department of plastic surgery SKIMS performed re-implantation of a three-year old child on Saturday. In a statement, SKIMS said that the surgeons re-implanted three fingers of hand in a three year old child whose hand had got stuck in the wheel of a motor cycle.
    “In the 14 hour surgery, the team of surgeons was able to re-implant all the three digits of the child,” the statement said.
    Doctors at the hospital said that such re-implantation surgeries were a challenge in children as the vessel size and tissues in children are very delicate and small.
    “Success becomes possible by proper expertise and the availability of high end equipment like operating microscopes, micro instruments and delicate sutures, that we have been able to procure for the department,” said Dr. Adil Hafiz, head department of plastic surgery.
    The doctors who conducted surgery successfully included Dr Mir Mohsin, Dr Haroon under the supervision of head of the department Dr Adil Hafeez.
    In another feat, department of anesthesia of SKIMS extended cervical epidural analgesia/ anaesthesia for managing the complete anaesthesia of an Myasthenia Gravis (MG) patients operated for high risk Thymictumours involving neck and chest which requires opening of the chest cavity. SKIMS administration said that the institute had gone a step ahead and crossed its barriers to establish itself as a world renowned centre in anaesthesia care services.
    Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease causing self-destruction of persons own muscle cell receptors resulting in profound muscle weakness affecting their quality of life. Besides many other renowned people, noted Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachhan is also suffering from MG.
    The procedure was conducted by Dr Talib Khan consultant Incharge, and residents Dr Shaista Yaqoob, Dr Parvaiz, Dr Nida and Dr Khurram under the supervision Professor Imtiaz A Naqash head Anesthesia and Critical Care.
    Director SKIMS professor Omer J Shah, congratulated the two department doctors and paramedical staff for such outstanding delivery of patient care services. He said saving and improving quality of lives was the mission of entire SKIMS family and the administration would leave no stone unturned to help them achieve that.
