Srinagar: Traffic was resumed on 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh highway and historic 86-km-long Mughal road after remaining suspended for eight days due to accumulation of snow and slippery road conditions.

Traffic on the highway, the only road linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir, was resumed after remaining suspended for eight days following heavy snowfall early last week.

However, only stranded vehicles at Kargil, Drass and Meenmarg were allowed to move towards Kashmir valley, an official said.

“Our priority is to clear all vehicles stranded on another side of the Zojila towards Kashmir as there is a fresh heavy snowfall warning from November 12,” he said.

The decision to allow traffic from Sonamarg in the central Kashmir district of Ganderbal to different parts of Ladakh region will be taken only after all stranded vehicles are cleared, he added.

The traffic official said the Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir to Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, was also opened today after eight days closure. Vehicles stranded on both sides of the Pir-ki-Gali will be cleared first before allowing fresh traffic, he added.

Meanwhile, one-way traffic will continue on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country on Friday and vehicles will ply from Jammu to Srinagar.
