Separatist shutdown affects life in Kashmir

Srinagar: Normal life was affected in Kashmir valley on Tuesday due to a protest shutdown called by the separatist leadership against the alleged ill-treatment meted out to JKLF chief Yasin Malik in custody.

All shops and other commercial establishments remained closed in commercial hub of Lal Chowk and other areas of the Srinagar city.

Public transport remained off the roads while private traffic was plying.

Reports of shutdown were received from other district headquarters of the valley, including south Kashmir’s Anantnag where polling is underway for the Lok Sabha seat. The shutdown was called by the Joint Resistance leadership – an amalgam of separatist outfits – against the “ill-treatment” to Malik in the NIA custody, suspension of cross-LoC trade and highway ban on civilian traffic.
